History

The decision to found the museum was taken in 1878, shortly after Italian unification

, but it only opened in 1908. Originally located in the Mole Antonelliana

, in 1938 it was transferred to its current site (which had previously housed the Piedmontese Chamber of Deputies, which was effectively the first parliament of a united Italy).

Displays

Its exhibits include weapons, flags, uniforms, printed and written documents (including the second-ever manuscript of the song Il Canto degli Italiani

), and artworks. The exhibition occupies about 3000 square metres across 26 rooms, and covers a wider period than the Risorgimento proper, stretching from the 18th century to the Second World War. It includes a specialized library, a prints cabinet and a documentary archive. Its friends association promotes initiatives for a greater knowledge of this historical period.
