. The City of Muskegon
is at the southwest corner of the township and is administratively autonomous.
The township was organized in 1837. The township claims to be the "oldest Township in the State of Michigan"; however, that is plainly mistaken as many other townships were created earlier than Muskegon Township. It might be more accurate to say that Muskegon Township was among the first townships created after Michigan was admitted as a state.

, and 1.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.21% of the population.
There were 6,581 households out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% were married couples
living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the township the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
