First period
- It was founded in 1821.
- Between 1821 and 1904 it had the name "Naval astronomic observatory" and was used commonly for the purposes of the Black sea fleet.
Second period
- From 1904 to 1991 the observatory was a part of the Pulkovo observatory and counts as the southern branch of the Main astronomic observatory.
Third period
- Since 1992 is independent observatory.
- in April 2007 was included in list of candidates to UNESCO world inheritance objects.
