. However, starting in 1850, the population and economy decreased. It wasn't until 1970 that the population started to grow, though this was mostly commuters into the region of Baden-Brugg.

Geography

Mönthal has an area, , of 3.93 square kilometres (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 1.78 square kilometre (0.687261842294712 sq mi) or 45.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.81 square kilometre (0.698844907052488 sq mi) or 46.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.34 square kilometre (0.131274733921462 sq mi) or 8.7% is settled (buildings or roads).

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.1%. 44.0% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.0% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 20.6% is used for growing crops and 22.9% is pastures, while 1.8% is used for orchards or vine crops.
