Nagarbhavi is a residential area of Bangalore
, Karnataka
, India
. Located in West Bangalore, Nagarbhavi is located between Mysore road and Magadi road.
It is surrounded by Vijaynagar on the north, Bangalore University
and Chandra Layout on the east, Magadi road on the west and Sir.M.V.Layout on the south. Nagarbhavi is broadly divided into two areas, called Nagarbhavi 1st stage and Nagarbhavi 2nd stage.
Traditionally known as the home of Bangalore University
, this area also houses the prestigious National Law School of India University
. This area also houses Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology
.
Nagarbhavi 1st stage comprises localities like Kalyana Nagara, Nagarbhavi Village, Canara bank colony, Bhairaveshwara Nagara, Moodala Palya, amongst others. These areas are very thickly populated and have a lot of commercial activity along the Nagarbhavi main road. These areas have smaller roads and a rough terrain.
Nagarbhavi 2nd stage is a complete contrast to the 1st stage. While the 1st stage is very old, the 2nd stage is a relatively new area. It is very well planned and most of the areas have wide roads and the road connectivity is laudable. Most of the roads here are now tarred, ending the age old woes of the people residing here. The BDA has divided Nagarbhavi 2nd stage into blocks 1-10. In addition, well planned residential localities like Annapoorneshwari Nagara, ITI Layout, MPM Layout, NGEF Layout and Papareddy Palya form a part of this area.
, the language of a majority of the inhabitants of the city of Bangalore, Nagarbhavi means literally "a well of snakes". It is not conclusively known, however, why it is called so. One school of thought is that the name is due to the high number of snakes present in the area. Also, some believe that it is called a "well" because of the surrounding hillocks that are no longer present due to urbanization.
. The Annapoorneshwari temple in the aptly named Annapoorneshwari Nagara and the Bhavani Shankara temple in Papareddy Palya was famous. There is also a Raghavendra Mutt in Papareddy Palya that is famous.
The BDA Shopping Complex is in Nagarbhavi 2nd stage, on the ring road, at the entrance of Annapoorneshwari Nagar. This area is abuzz with commercial activity. A Cafe Coffee Day outlet is the new addition to the area.
Nagarbhavi main road in the 1st stage is completely chaotic with a lot of commercial activity. One can find restaurants and fast food centers in this area.
Nagarbhavi is also one of the oldest localities in Bangalore. This makes it one of the most conservative places to live in Bangalore. It has a substantial population of long-term, mostly Kannada-speaking residents with established family ties to the locality. The residents are mainly middle class. The initial residents were mainly villagers from the old Nagarbhavi village. Nagarbhavi 2nd stage's population is mostly upper middle class, with a large population of government officers and executives, but recently there has been a large influx of business owners and young IT professionals.
Being at the western part of Bangalore, living in Nagarbhavi means a very short commute for employees working in Government offices in the central business district and longer commute to major IT employers for many of its residents. However, with a lot of greenery around, and with a series of commercial establishments coming up shortly in its vicinity, Nagarbhavi has maintained its desirability for the upwardly-mobile, family-oriented crowd.
The famous Vrishabhavati river flows through this area. The river is very polluted these days and smells foul at times.
Fortis Hospital has recently opened a branch in Nagarbhavi 2nd Stage.
