. The competition was first held in 1971. Up to 2006 it was known as Naisten SM-sarja ("Women's Finnish championship series").

The league consists of 12 clubs who play two rounds with a total of 22 matches per team in a season. At the end of the season the 12th placed team is relegated to the second level and the 11th placed team continues to relegation play-offs. The league champion qualifies for the next season's UEFA Women's Champions League.
