History

The school was founded as part of then Nan Hua Girls' School in 1917 by a group of Chinese businessmen led by Xiong Shangfu (熊尚父). The campus was located along Coleman Street

Due to a lack of funds, the school was closed in 1924 and reopened only in 1928.

A branch school, located along Middle Road, was set up in 1939. In 1941, a new campus, built at Adis Road, was named Nan Hua Girls' High, while the existing campus along Bencoolen Street was renamed Nan Hua Girls' High (Branch).

 both schools were closed. The main school was reopened after the war in 1945 while the branch school was reopened only in the following year, 1946. In 1956, the main school was renamed Nan Hwa Girls' High School.

1961 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Nan Hua Primary School, commencing with the separation of the administrative structure of the main and branch schools. In the following year, 1962, a new campus along Bencoolen Street was erected for the branch school, which was renamed Nan Hwa Primary School in 1964, together with the introduction of co-education.

In 1972, English was used as the medium of instruction for the teaching of Mathematics and Science. Both Chinese and English stream classes were offered in 1978, followed by the introduction of pre-primary classes in 1979.

Both the main school, Nan Hwa Girls' High School and the branch school, Nan Hwa Primary School, moved into one compound along Clementi Avenue 1 in 1983. This compound has since then been home to Nan Hwa Girls' High School (now Nan Hua High School

). 1983 also marked a significant move in the educational system, with Nan Hua Primary School as an English medium school offering Chinese, Malay and Tamil as mother tongue languages.

Nan Hua Primary School was among six selected schools to participate in the AITP (Accelerating the Use of
Information Technology in the Primary Schools) Programme in 1995. In the following year, the school became an IT Demonstration school.

November 1998 marked not only Nan Hua Primary School's relocation to its present campus at Jalan Lempeng; it also marked the commencement of Gifted Education Programme (GEP) classes in the school.

The school underwent PRIME upgrading works from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, the school held an official opening ceremony of the upgraded school campus in conjunction with 86th anniversary celebrations, with Teo Chee Hean

as the guest-of-honour. In the same year, single-session classes were introduced.

Student leadership

The school has a leadership development programme, including prefects, monitors, house captains and CCA leaders. Notable events include Be Yourself Day and forums organized by the prefectorial council. Since 2007, the Head Prefect has been elected by the staff and students of the school.
