School of Science

Considering the expertise available in the disciplines of science at the C. B. Patel Research Centre, Mithibai College, D. J. Sanghvi Engineering College and N. M. College, the NMIMS deemed-to-be-university established a School of Science in 2007 whose purpose is to develop technically skilled manpower for industry.

Science programmes

With the boom in information technology and increasing sophistication in instrumentation techniques, there is now a very thin dividing line between the disciplines of science. Therefore there is a greater need for flexibility in scientific thought as well as training on an interdisciplinary plane. With this thought in view, the NMIMS deemed-to-be-university has introduced three highly innovative and unique interdisciplinary courses at the School of Science from the academic year 2007-2008.
  • Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program in Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences (minimum 5 years duration)
  • Ph.D. program in Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences (minimum 3 years duration)

The School of Commerce first opened its doors to an incoming batch in 2007. The next three years saw initiatives on several fronts.

ASMSOC has had visits from foreign institutions for collaborative programs/student exchanges, who have gone away impressed by the school's pedagogical approach to undergraduate education. ASMSOC is translating these deliberations into firm commitments that will benefit the school in the long run.

The pedagogic innovations included upgrading the learning process through case studies and presentations and enhancing the overall student experience through interactive class discussions, debates, project based assignments and a system of continuous evaluation.

The ASMSOC follows a trimester-based approach to course delivery and scheduling and a CGPA (cumulative grade point average) based relative method of grading.

  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)

Libraries

NMIMS University libraries reflect the complete world of scholarship and information. It is the work of the NMIMS libraries to provide the faculty, students, and researchers — now and in the future — with comprehensive access to these materials. The NMIMS University Library is named officially as “R.M. Desai Library”, after illustrious trustee Shri Rasiklal Maniben Desai. The library was established in 1982, with a focus of developing library catering to management education. With the growth of institute to university, the library also grew.

Today, NMIMS has seven libraries in single system. The university library has a Mumbai campus library and a Shirpur operations library. The library is well-furnished and air conditioned. The library has an extensive collection of 58,000 volumes of books covering all aspects of business & management, pharmacy & pharmacology, engineering, architecture, science and commerce and related areas like economics, behavioural science, information technology, law, etc. The core of the collections is found in the School of Business Management Library (Mumbai Campus) and is acknowledged as the flagship library.

The periodical section is a vital source for academic research and up-to-date business information. Besides books and journals, library houses audio-video material, newspapers, reports, case studies, news clippings, management games, and psychology and management test. Library users can access more than 5000 full-text journals covering titles published by Elsevier (Science Direct), Springer, John Wiley, etc. and from agregators like Ebsco and Proquest. Links to corporate databases like CMIE, Capital Markets, ISI Emerging Markets are available. The library arranges regular awareness programmes on use of electronic resources.

The entire library collection can be searched through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). Users can access the OPAC to find out the real-time availability of library materials. Faculty and students can reserve items that are on loan. Faculty and students are encouraged to send request for new acquisition through the OPAC. The facility is moving from an electronic library to a digital library. In the first step, the library has scanned all the question papers and are live for users use through OPAC. CDs, VCDs, and DVDs are mirrored and kept on a dedicated server.

The learning resource provides a number of innovative information services and electronic databases that facilitates research including Journal Contents Service, News Clipping Service, Monthly Documents Additions Lists, Info Alert Service and online CD viewing.

The library has an institutional membership with British Council Library and American Information Resource Center wherein users can use the resources from both these libraries. The library is a member of INDEST AICTE consortia. Library also has tie ups with Harvard Business School for cases for other Harvard products.

The library organizes one seminar every year where librarians from all over the country come together to discuss a particular topic. On a lighter side, library runs a movie club through which all the NMIMS community enjoys a movie every month. The library conducts an annual user survey to understand where the library is lacking and help improve and maintain the services that are appreciated. The target users are the students and faculty members. The survey covers the users overall opinion about the library collection, services, timings, awareness level about e-resources and reading area.
