The event was formerly classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted its current status, Group 1, in 1985. For much of its history the race has been contested over 7 furlongs, but this was extended to 1 mile in 1997. Its previous distance was restored in 2000.
In 2009 the race was renamed in memory of Vincent O'Brien
(1917–2009), a highly successful racehorse trainer
, in 2009. O'Brien recorded fifteen victories in the National Stakes, and some of his greatest successes were achieved at the Curragh.. It reverted to its previous title in 2011.
