National heritage sites in South Africa
are structures or defined areas of land declared to be of historic or cultural importance and granted certain legal protections. The designation replaced that of "national monument" (issued by the now defunct National Monuments Council) after 1999.
Prior to a formal and systematic survey to identify places worthy of conservation, a permit is required to alter or demolish any structure older than 60 years.
The same legislation also protects all graves older than 60 years not situated in a cemetery.
