The town was founded in 1933 as a settlement for convicts and initially called Mogilny Yar. Until 1959, the village was the administrative center of the Vasyuganskoye area, which then became part of Kargasoksky district.
The Novovasyuganskogo rural settlement also includes the village of Aypolovo. The head of the rural settlement is Alexander R. Kergand.
