The original southern terminus of NY 205 is at the northern terminus of its concurrency with NY 23
. It was extended southward to I-88

In the town of Otsego, NY 205 turns right to overlap NY 80
for its final 2.1 miles (3.4 km), ending at NY 28
.
NY 205 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It originally began at NY 23
northwest of Oneonta and ended at NY 80
