. The council consists of 78 councillors, three for each of the city's 26 wards. It is currently controlled by Labour and led by Nick Forbes.
The Current Lord Mayor is Brenda Hindmarsh and the Deputy Lord Mayor (Sheriff) is Geoff O'Brien for 2010 to 2011.

The office of Leader of the Council was formally established during T Dan Smith's period of control, with official recognition and administrative support being accorded to the Leader of the Council and the Leader of the Opposition.
