His new managerial role sparked new chants from the Hull City supporters, including "Barmby Army" and "He's one of our own", as he was given a splendid reception by the travelling fans. In the days that followed, the club announced plans on special t-shits featuring some of these chants. Barmby's second match in charge, a home game against Burnley at the KC Stadium, ended in a 3-2 defeat, after Hull City led 2–0 after 76 minutes.
