Born in South Africa, Compton moved to England while in his teens and was educated at Harrow School

Injury set him back for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, during which he was unable to perform, and he only played in one first-class match in 2005. He established himself in 2006, with a string of strong scores, including five centuries, and was capped by the county in that season. He was selected to tour with the England A team in Bangladesh
