Grimouard was a distinguished commander during the American War of Independence. He commanded the frigate Minerve when she was captured by HMS Courageux in 1781. Grimouard was wounded and taken prisoner, to be exchanged soon afterwards.
He took part to the capture of Tobago
and the capture of Grenada under de Grasse.
He later took command of the 74-gun Scipion
, fighting with gallantry and skill during the Action of 18 October 1782

Grimouard was guillotined in Rochefort in 1794.
