The school was established in 1963, and has approximately 1250 students. It is the longest-established secondary school in Noosa area.

The school has two campuses in Cooroy (head campus) and Pomona. The Pomona Campus was originally the Cooroora Secondary College before the two schools merged. Years 8-9 are taught at the Pomona campus while all years are taught at the Cooroy campus.

The school's motto is Excellence through Diversity, previously Industria Vincit Omnia (Industry Conquers All).

The school offers certificates in Hospitality and Business Communication and Technolog, Event Production,Media and each year, runs the Australian Business Week (ABW) program for its Year 11 students.

The school has six houses - Borumba, Cooroora, Eerwah, Nandroya, Pinbarren and Tinbeerwah. The houses are named after the mountain ranges in the school's area.

Administration

The school's principal is Mr Barry Dittman whose administration team consists of Stacey Daveson and Mr Ian Yarham .

Hall

The hall on the Cooroy campus is the biggest in the Noosa area, and is used by many private companies such as dance studios, music schools, and other state schools. It has advanced lighting and audio systems with fifty static lighting channels and a total of twenty-nine audio channels with twenty Sends, five Receives, and two communication channels. The stage was designed to be used for large productions with its many lighting bars, numerous intelligent lights, and extra power circuits for the bigger shows. The hall can seat approximately one thousand people. The technical side of the hall is run the by the senior live productions classes.

Studio

Noosa District State High School was one of first state schools to get a fully functional recording studio as part of grants from the Bligh government, the studio broadcast audio throughout the school during breaks, it is also capable of recording a six track band, and videos using a green screen, the studio was designed by students and Peter Gorman. The Studio, known as TARDIS, is one of the newest additions to the school grounds.

The studio was named after a machine from the long-running science fiction
