It was created by a split from Mo i Rana
on 1 January 1923. The new municipality had a population of 1,305.
On 1 January 1964, Nord-Rana was merged with Mo i Rana
, parts of Sør-Rana
and Nesna
to create the new municipality Rana
. Prior to the merger the population of Nord-Rana was 11,636.
