History

Established in 1954, the Northwest Community School District is one of the largest districts in Jackson County. The district includes approximately 144 square miles (373 km²) and serves 3,600 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and another 600 children and adults through an extensive Childcare and Adult & Community Education Program. The district currently employs over 300 staff members. After having 5 separate major buildings for the past few decades, the district has closed Flora List Elementary, and has consolidated the students into the other 4 buildings.
The name of the school (Northwest) likely comes from its position in the Northwest portion of Jackson county. There are other school districts in the county that similarly have directional names. The school chose as its mascot the well-known figure of the Northwest Territories—the Mounties. Fittingly with this mascot, the school colors are red and black. The school purchased a mascot costume in 2008, which can now be seen at many athletic events in the district.

Extracurricular activities

Northwest has a well-respected music department. Each spring, the band and choir come together and put on a college concert which follows the format of the University of Michigan School of Music's college concert. Also, both the choir and band participate in festivals.
