The current number of students in the district is around 13,500. It is expected to have up to 95,000 students by the early 2020s, and is the second fastest growing school district in Texas.

Teacher salaries at Northwest are also second highest in the state, making extremely intense competition for jobs.

In the 2009-2010 school year, all high school students in the district received Dell Latitude 2100 netbooks for classroom and home use. The netbooks (a mini laptop) have a very strong security system which blocks certain websites deemed inappropriate by the school both at home and on the school's server. In the 2010-2011 school year, all middle school students also received them.
