Background

Middleburg Academy was founded in 1965 as Notre Dame Academy by the Sisters of Notre Dame of Chardon, Ohio. Originally a girls boarding school, in 1990 it became a co-educational day school. In 2000, the school was purchased from the Sisters by an independent Board of Trustees and in 2009 became a fully independent, nonsectarian school.

Education and Extracurriculars

The school welcomes students of all faiths who seek an independent, co-educational, college preparatory high school in the Northern Virginia area. Middleburg Academy has a highly qualified and experienced faculty. Out of the 27 full time members of faculty, 17 hold one or more advanced degrees with 5 holding PhDs. Advanced placement (AP) courses are offered in all academic disciplines. Dual-enrollment courses are also offered, which are taught on campus by faculty who are adjunct professors at Lord Fairfax Community College.

Students participate in a variety of clubs and organizations such as Green Club, Spirit Club, Yearbook, Student Council, and the Lunch Bunch (a community service group of students that mentor students at Middleburg Elementary School). Students are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of community service each year and many easily exceed this number. Community service is a prominent part of the school culture, with many opportunities for Advisory groups to participate in activities such as Adopt-a-Soldier and giving to needy families during the Holidays.

Each student is assigned to an Advisory group, which is a group of 10-15 students and one faculty member. Advisory groups meet once a week. The faculty member acts as a liaison to parents for information about upcoming school activities and for a first contact when students need guidance.

Middleburg Academy starts off its school year with "River Day", when students participate in outdoor activities and enjoy picnics with members of staff and faculty. Year round, students enjoy their own lounge on campus with comfortable couches, a natural fireplace and table tennis.

At graduation from Middleburg Academy, women wear white ball gowns and men wear tuxedos. All students must be accepted into one four-year accredited college, pass all classes in their senior year, and fulfill a mandatory 25 community service hour prerequisite in order to graduate. College counseling is an important part of the academic experience and is tailored to each student and their family.
