The journal makes use of the on-line reviewing process developed for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics
by its editor Ulrich
Pöschl and colleagues. Submissions considered suitable for review are first published as unreviewed grey literature
in the sister discussion journal Ocean Science Discussions (OSD). They are then subject to interactive public discussion, during which the referees' comments (anonymous or attributed), additional short comments by other members of the scientific community (attributed) and the authors' replies are also published in OSD.
Authors then have a chance to revise their papers in response to the referees and public comments and the review
process is completed in the normal manner. Publications that are finally accepted are published on-line, within a few days, as fully reviewed papers in OS. To ensure publication precedence for authors, and to provide a lasting record of scientific discussion, OS and OSD are both ISSN-registered, permanently archived and fully citable.
The editor-in-chief is William Jenkins of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
and he is supported by an editorial board from around the world representing the main fields of oceanographic research. The technical process of publishing is performed by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union
