since 1975, it is restricted to three-year-old non-winners of a $50,000 sweepstakes. The race is contested at a distance of one mile. First run in 1937 as the Oceanside Handicap, through 1939 and again in 1975-76 it was open to horses age three and up. In 1950, the race was restricted to fillies

Historically a very popular event, the Oceanside was raced in two divisions in 1964, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008. In 2007, the number of entrants required it to be run in three divisions. The Oceanside Handicap was not run from 1940 through 1948.
