Oeffelt was a separate municipality until 1994, when it became part of Boxmeer.
The first time Oeffelt was mentioned was in a document in 1075, in this document Oeffelt is mentioned as Uflo. This could be a combination from the Keltish words Uffa (water) and Ten (settlement), so a settlement by the meuse river.
