Olavsvern

Olavsvern is a Royal Norwegian Navy
auxiliary base located just outside the city of Tromsø
. It is located along the European route E8
at the entrance to the Ramfjorden from the Balsfjorden.
The base is small compared to its counter, Haakonsvern
in Bergen
. It lost its status as an orlogsstasjon in 2002. It is now a subordinate unit of Haakonsvern and no units are permanently stationed there. A consequence of the restructuring of the Royal Norwegian Navy is that the base may be shut down in the near future.
On 14 March 2005, an accident in a scuba
exercise inside the base led to the death of SBS
commander Lieutenant Colonel Richard van der Horst.
