From On-Cor’s inception in 1946, advertising has played a unique role. On-Cor’s founder, Sol Friend, was a pioneer in television advertising, utilizing sponsorships and product placements, and associating the brand with spokespeople and popular children’s characters. Even in the company's early days, they recognized the value of retail support, and the company made heavy use of radio and television, especially children's programs.
In the early 1950s, the Garfield Goose children's TV show on WGN-TV
offered a Rubber Tubby Duck as a premium for one On-Cor Minute Steaks wrapper and 25 cents. The initial response was disappointing until it was discovered that the mail was placed in the wrong post office box. When corrected, almost 20,000 Rubber Tubby Ducks had to be mailed out.
Later, Jim Henson
created a Muppet character called “Oncky.”
