One Touch
Encyclopedia
One Touch is the debut album by English girl group
the Sugababes
, released by London Records
in the UK on 27 November 2000 and the following month in most other European territories. The trio worked with producer Cameron McVey
on the majority of the album, which produced four Top 40 hits, including the hit "Overload", and "Run for Cover
".
Despite peaking at number 26 in the UK Album Charts and being certified Gold
by the BPI
, and faring even better in German-speaking Europe, where it reached the top ten in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, the sales of One Touch did not meet London Records
' expectations, and the group eventually got dropped in Autumn 2001, making it their only release with the label. In addition, it became the group's only album with the group's original line-up. Siobhán Donaghy
left the group in 2001. She initially stating that she wanted to pursue a fashion
career, but was eventually diagnosed with clinical depression
amid reports of in-fighting between the Sugababes members.
In a March 2009 interview with Ponystep, former Sugababe Mutya Buena
revealed that she thinks One Touch is the band's best work and that she still listens to it. Donaghy has also stated in a separate interview that the album had been "ahead of its time."
In Ireland the album once again failed to chart within the top 20, after charting at just Number 55, however the album has been considered to be a success across central Europe, following the success of the début single, "Overload". In Germany, the album peaked at Number 7 remains the band's highest charting album in the country to date, despite it not having been certified as of yet. Likewise, in Austria and Switzerland, it charted at Number 6 and Number 8 respectively; however the release of the band's fourth studio album
, Taller in More Ways
proved to be slightly more successful by charting just two places higher and has been certified Gold
in both countries.
In Asia, the album fared well, and made the group one of the most famous acts of the 2000s. "Overload" peaked at number two in the MTV Asia Hitlist, "New Year" peaked at number ten, while "Run for Cover
" and "Soul Sound
" peaked at number twelve and number sixteen respectively. They became the first girl group since the Spice Girls
to have all their singles from their debut album chart within the top twenty of the MTV Asia Hitlist.
Finally, the album peaked at Number 63 on the Australian ARIA
Chart, the album peaked at a healthy Number 16 on the New Zealand RIANZ Chart, before sales quickly dropped. It has since been certified Gold
in the UK.
, became the Sugababes' first top ten single in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 6. The album also spawned three more top 30 singles: "New Year", "Run for Cover
" and "Soul Sound
", which peaked at number 12, 13 and 30 respectively. "Run for Cover" also proved to have relative success across Europe, but did not challenge that of "Overload".
