On January 7, 2000, Spears was about halfway through the recording process of the album. Spears had been working on the (then untitled) album both in the U.S. and in Sweden. Spears said that this time around, "The album will be a bit funkier and edgier than [her] previous material". At the time she was in New York City recording new songs and finishing up songs she began working on in November and December. "When I did the first album, I had just turned 16. I mean, when I look at the album cover, I'm like, 'Oh, my lordy,'" she said. "I know this next album's going to be totally different--especially the material. I just got finished recording the first six tracks in Sweden two months ago, and the material is so much more funkier and edgier. And, of course, it's more mature because I've grown as a person too."
