William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon"...

. It was created using Moby Shakespeare as the texts, which in turn was created from the 1864 Globe edition of the complete works. The project's goal is the be a useful and free resource for scholars, readers, actors, and anyone else with an interest in Shakespeare's creations.

The works are divided into three genres:

• Plays
• Sonnets
• Poems (Sonnets are indeed poems, but they are usually considered distinct from Shakespeare's other poetry).

Open Source Shakespeare also includes

• A concordance
• An advanced search engine
• Character search
• Some basic statistics

Users can also download the source code and database. There is now a version of the site, designed for portable devices, called Mobile Open Source Shakespeare.
