Operational data store
Encyclopedia
An operational data store (or "ODS") is a database
designed to integrate data from multiple sources for additional operations on the data. The data is then passed back to operational systems for further operations and to the data warehouse for reporting.
Because the data
originates from multiple sources, the integration often involves cleaning, resolving redundancy and checking against business rules for integrity. An ODS is usually designed to contain low-level or atomic (indivisible) data (such as transactions and prices) with limited history that is captured "real time" or "near real time" as opposed to the much greater volumes of data stored in the Data warehouse
generally on a less-frequent basis.
technologies like data virtualization
or data federation. This will allow operational access to the data for operational reporting, master data or reference data management
.
An "ODS" is not a replacement or substitute for an enterprise data warehouse
but in turn could become a source.

Database
A database is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes, usually in digital form. The data are typically organized to model relevant aspects of reality , in a way that supports processes requiring this information...

The term data refers to qualitative or quantitative attributes of a variable or set of variables. Data are typically the results of measurements and can be the basis of graphs, images, or observations of a set of variables. Data are often viewed as the lowest level of abstraction from which...

In computing, a data warehouse is a database used for reporting and analysis. The data stored in the warehouse is uploaded from the operational systems. The data may pass through an operational data store for additional operations before it is used in the DW for reporting.A data warehouse...

General Use
The general purpose of an "ODS" is to integrate data from disparate source systems in a single structure, using data integrationData integration
Data integration involves combining data residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of these data. This process becomes significant in a variety of situations, which include both commercial and scientific domains...

Master data
Master data, which may include reference data, is information that is key to the operation of business and is the primary focus of the Information Technology discipline of Master Data Management . This key business information may include data about customers, products, employees, materials,...
