Main occupations on the island are fishing, including fish farming, and farming. Crops include tobacco, rice and potatoes. One use of Ōshima's rice is in the brewing of sake. Other occupations include local government and school teachers.

There is a public primary, middle and high school, as well as a nursery school. Some students at the high school are boarders, those who had problems in other schools. The boarders also serve to keep up the student numbers in Ōshima's small population.
