Fraser worked as a steel worker with Sydney Steel Corporation
(SYSCO) for 35 years. He was elected to the Cape Breton County Council in 1964 before moving into provincial politics. He was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly
in the 1978 provincial election
and in the 1981 provincial election
. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton West and then Cape Breton The Lakes
as a member of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia
until he died suddenly on October 29, 1982. Osborne Faser was also a veteran of World War II
, serving in Germany, Holland, England, Africa and Belgium.
He was the first recipient of the District 8 Citizen of the Year. He had one sister and was married to Mary Ruth Briscoe of Pembroke, Ontario
and they had 8 children: Darlene (Kenneth) Morrison, Ruthie (Robert) Rose, Ronnie Fraser, Brian Fraser, Cathy Seale, Phillip Fraser, Bonnie Fraser and Chris Fraser.
Ossie was an avid hockey fan, who loved the Montreal Canadiens
. The annual "Ossie Fraser Memorial Hockey Tournament" is held in Fraser's name at Coxheath Arena, Cape Breton.
