Encyclopedia
Owen Philip King is an American
author
and the youngest son of authors Stephen
and Tabitha King
. He has two older siblings, Naomi King
and Joseph Hillstrom King
, and grew up in Bangor, Maine
. He is married to the writer Kelly Braffet.
King's first book, We’re All In This Together, a collection of three short stories and a novella
, was published in 2005 by Bloomsbury USA to very strong reviews. Kirkus Reviews wrote: "The title novella of King's first collection is its heart and soul: a powerful exploration of the flimsiness of political moral certainty....The novella...like all great storytelling, has real strength. Newcomer King is a talent to watch."
His forthcoming book, Reenactment, is described as "an epic, comic novel about a young auteur making his first film and coming to terms with his life in the aftermath of that film's spectacularly bizarre failure." King's short fiction has appeared in One Story
and Prairie Schooner among other journals, and he was recognized for special mention in the 2009 Pen-O. Henry Prize Stories.
Andrea Sachs interviewed King about the book for Time Magazine; she asked him what it was like to be the child of Stephen and Tabitha King. Owen answered: "I understand people's curiosity and yet, I've made a really decided effort to write in a way that's individual to me, and do as much as I can possibly do on my own without being insane about it."
In 2006, King told an interviewer for the Sunday Telegraph
: "I obviously have an advantage as a writer in terms of name recognition. But it's also a disadvantage because people expect it just to be a nepotistic exercise and for you to suck. You have to keep working to convince them to give you a chance."
A poem, "For Owen", is included in Stephen King's story collection Skeleton Crew
. In the story collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes
, the non-fictional story Head Down is about Owen's Little League
baseball team.
Owen King's likeness was used for the G.I. Joe
figure Sneak Peek, as he was an avid fan as a child. The non-fiction book Haunted Heart: The Life and Times of Stephen King also indicates that Owen had a hand in creating the Crystal Ball character.
