A site just across an adjacent creek, already studied by a respected archaeologist and deemed a major Mississippian-era community with valuable artifacts, was being turned into sport fields; the U.S. Corps of Engineers stopped the project, however, because the contractor, after turning up ancient remains, failed to notify proper authorities and dispose of them according to law.
