The town's name comes from Indian pictographs painted on cliffs overlooking the nearby Concho River.These pictographs cover nearly half a mile upstream from the town of Paint Rock. Some of the pictures painted on the rocks include animals, human figures, and handprints.

living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the town the population was spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $32,500, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $21,786 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income
