The area has seen manifold development in all wakes in the recent 15 years from a small tiny village to a Hub- village. The Panchayat is seen with political aspirants of various parties. The area is predominately consists of Local fisherman folks, Dalits , Nayakkars , and the Gramanieses
The beach is protected with concrete walls to prevent erosion, and also to prevent high tide. The beach has a temple. The pavement stretches to around a km and a patrol checkpoint is also installed for safety. Bank of India branch is available in Palavakkam.
The region has many internet cafes, coffee points, food joints, fast foods, game centers and restaurants (low and mid-ranged hotels).
Dr. A.L Mudaliar Matriculation school is located within the Madras University colony.

"Aalladi Amman" Temple is one of the oldest temples in palavakkam. It was originally on the ECR main road and couple of years ago due to the widening of the ECR road it was moved to Pachaiappan Street. The divine goddess is considered to be very powerful among the people. The Temple is managed by its founder’s family throughout these years.

After Adayar there are no petrol filling stations on the East Coast Road (ECR) till Palavakkam. As of now, there are 3 petrol filling stations in the locality. There was a Hero Honda Showroom in Palavakkam now it is Bajaj Showroom and service center. Famous mobile shop Univercell & Technopark also has a branch in Palavakkam. There is also a branch of paint and hardware major Sri Kanagam hardwares known to sell hardware materials at cheap rate. For Shopping, there is a 2 storey shopping center near the bus stop named the Singapore Shoppee & there also is Aditya Birla group's super market MORE. There also exists a Vessels Merchant named Sri Murugan Stores wherein we get all household appliances, plastics, brass and steel utensils.Entertainment

The Vegetable and Fish markets used to be on the public road, which is a menace for the traffic on ECR and regular road accidents on the East Coast Road. Hence, these were cleared by the Municipal authorities and moved to the inner side towards Beach. Apart from this, there are grocery shops near Periyar Street also.There is also a famous paint shop called Murugan Paints near St.Anthony's church.Educational institutions
In Palavakkam, there is one government owned school and many Private owned schools. The government school is till 10th standard, thereafter the students have to choose either any private schools in palavakkam or travel to the nearby schools, which are no less than 3 miles. The prominent schools in the area include Manuelmony Matriculation school, which teaches students till the 12th standard offering both science and commerce streams. The school is well known in the area for producing good results in the board exams. There is also a typewriting institute in which Typewriting and Shorthand courses are taught. University Colony (a) Palkalai nagar
In Palavakkam, there is a colony for the staff of University Of Madras.There are more than 200 houses for the staff. However Outsiders few Non employees of the University also live in this colony.There is a Ganesh (Vinayagar) temple at the beginning of the road leading to the colony and it must be added that the road leads to the Palavakkam beach,Najeeb residential plot (Azra House) is also located at Jaya Shankar Nagar.
