Temple Lea Houston
(1860–1905), the eighth and last child of the legendary Sam Houston
, built a home near Panhandle. In 1881, he was named district attorney
for the 35th Judicial District. He was elected to the Texas State Senate in 1884, two years before he met the minimum age requirement of twenty-six. Houston was known for favoring legislation popular with frontiersmen.

There were 945 households out of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% were married couples
living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% were non-families. 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,686, and the median income for a family was $50,735. Males had a median income of $38,155 versus $25,329 for females. The per capita income
