A landfill of Athens is situated further east, which takes the central and the southern part of the Athens area's rubbish into this site; the area is about 200,000 to 250,000 square metres. The landfill has been in use since the mid to late 20th century.
The suburb is popular with families of generals, admirals, marshals, and other Greek Army
officers, since the army used to sell land to its officers in the area during the 60s and 70s. Papagou is thus considered as one of the upper-class suburbs of Athens, properties are expensive and sought-after, mainly due to the suburbs history and green scenery.
