Paraccel
Encyclopedia
ParAccel, Inc. is a vendor in the data warehouse appliance
market category. Vendors in this category provide a purpose-built database management system
used for data warehousing, business intelligence (BI)
and analytic processing and, according to Hackathorn and White, there are varying degrees of data warehouse appliance
ranging from a “native appliance” (tightly integrated software and hardware) to only software (without the hardware).
In today’s analytics-driven environment, gaining fast and accurate business insights from massive volumes of data provides significant strategic advantage. As the leader in the high performance Analytics Platform market, ParAccel enables organizations to address their most dynamic and complex analytic challenges and rapidly gain ultra-fast, deep insights from very large data sets. ParAccel’s Fortune 1000 customers include companies in the Financial Services, Retail and Healthcare industries, as well as government agencies. Each organization uses ParAccel to address their business-critical data issues outside the scope of conventional data warehouses and existing analytic tools.
ParAccel is based in California with offices in Campbell
and San Diego.
According to Mr. Howard, “ParAccel is a column-based database running on an MPP (massively parallel processing) platform. The company is a software only provider but you can have the software pre-installed and configured on a relevant hardware system from Sun
(a major partner), HP
or whoever.”
ParAccel's DBMS engine is built from scratch though the initial optimizer was PostgreSQL
. ParAccel began phasing in a new optimizer (Omne) in release 2.0.
ParAccel previously offered two different analytic database products named AMIGO and MAVERICK. The AMIGO product was designed to accelerate queries directed at an existing data warehouse while leaving the data warehouse as-is. With the AMIGO product, the existing data warehouse remained as the database of record. In contrast the MAVERICK product was designed as a stand-alone data store. ParAccel discontinued the AMIGO product offering in favor of the stand-alone offering which they evolved into the product now called the ParAccel Analytic Database (PADB).
