The Parlamentarischer Rat ("Parliamentary Council") was the West German constitutional convention that created the current constitution of the (reunited) Federal Republic of Germany. Besides its primary purpose, to prepare a new constitution for Germany
, it also drafted the Election Law ("Bundeswahlgesetz") for the first Bundestag election of 1949 and it selected Bonn (over Frankfurt) to be the provisional capital of the Federal Republic. The Parliamentary Council was formed in 1948 and disassembled once it had finished its purpose, i.e. after the ratification of the Grundgesetz and the enactment of the first Election Law which among others the Grundgesetz had left it as a remaining task.
