In 2005, a retrospective exhibition, Pat Adams Paintings: 1954 - 2004, celebrating the 50th anniversary of her first show at New York's Zabriskie Gallery seemed to cement Adams's reputation. The exhibition caused the The New York Sun to call her "one of the most important abstract painters today," and Ken Johnson of The New York Times
remarked on "her long and distinguished career." Adams, according to Johnson, is "a painter who has stayed true to certain idiosyncratic visual and spiritual predilections without straying far from the main highway of Modernist abstraction."
