History

In 1971, brothers Fran and Bryce Patch opened a commercial printing company, producing games and related items for other companies. They printed Trivial Pursuit game boards and Cabbage Patch doll sticker books among other things. Then in 1985, the brothers decided it was time to start their own toy and game company, and Patch Products was founded.

The company started with a line of PuzzlePatch tray puzzles for preschoolers, which are still in production. The company
celebrated the milestone of making its 100 millionth puzzle in 2008. Through the years, organizations such as the American Toy Institute, Great American Toy Contest, National Association for Gifted Children, Nick Jr. magazine and Toy Tips have recognized the puzzles for their role in helping education children.

In 1992, the company obtained the license for TriBond

, its first board game. TriBond later was inducted into Games Magazine's Hall of Fame. Patch followed the success of TriBond with two other board games, Blurt! and MadGab. The popularity of the three games turned Patch Products into a key player in the board game market. The company sold the brand rights to the three games to Mattel in 2004 so it could focus on developing new games.

Patch successfully entered the world of brand licensing in 2000 by securing the game rights to several pop music groups including *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and 98˚. Patch also has licensed the rights for such high-profile brands as Jeff Foxworthy's You Might Be a Redneck If..., Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, McDonald's, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Garanimals, Jim Henson’s Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants.

In 2008, Patch Products acquired Smethport Specialty Co., a leading manufacturer of toys and specialty line products, including the Lauri brand. Smethport is well-known in the educational market, with its primary products including educational games and activity sets. One of its best-known products is the classic toy, Wooly Willy. The Lauri brand is loved for its educational and fun play value with items such as pegging, crepe rubber puzzles, Peel & Stick activities and lacing.

Patch began an innovative line of 3D Floor Puzzles in 2009 featuring colorful and fun images that become three-dimensional when looked at through the included 3D glasses. Patch has also stayed up to date by working with Paze Interactive to develop apps for Wooly Willy, Farkle and Word Shout. Patch has also recently introduced the use of QR codes on their product packaging, so that customers can scan the codes using their smartphones and watch a quick video about the game before deciding to buy.

Today the small printing company has grown to a national manufacturer of family entertainment products with a full line of board games, card and dice games, puzzles, toys, activities and educational tools.

Million Minute Family Challenge

From September through December every year, Patch Products sponsors the Million Minute Family Challenge, a grass-roots effort to promote interaction and communication among family and friends through playing board games. The goal is to encourage at least 1,000 families, groups or organizations in each of the 50 states and Canada to play a board game together for 20 minutes. That's 1,000,000 minutes. It's a fun, free activity that anyone can join, and the website offers tools to get groups started. Minutes are logged online so participants can view totals of all groups, states and provinces.
