Government Boards

McClure was appointed a member of the Minister's Aged Care Advisory Group (2011) and also the Aged Care Consultative Committee (2011). He represents Aged and Community Services on the National Aged Care Alliance (2011). He was a participant in the Federal Government's 2020 Summit (2008). He was Chairperson of the Australian Government’s Reference Group on Welfare Reform (1999–2000) which produced a blueprint for welfare reform "Participation Support for More Equitable Society" (2000), (the McClure Report). The Federal Government committed $1.7 billion for its implementation over 4 years. He was also Deputy Chairperson of the Welfare to Work Consultative Forum (2005–6), Member of the Prime Minister's Community Business Partnership Board (1998–2007), Chairperson of the OECD-LEED Forum on Social Innovation based in Paris (2004–6), Member of the Prime Minister's Mature Aged Taskforce and Member of the Federal Government Board for a New Tax System (1999–2000).

Early career

In 1968 he entered the Franciscan Order and, after seven years study in philosophy,theology, biblical studies, communications and languages, he was ordained a Franciscan priest. McClure later resigned the priesthood and ministry.

McClure worked as a Senior Social Worker and Director of the Migrant Services Unit within the Department of Social Security in Perth, WA from 1985 - 90. In 1990 he was promoted and transferred to Sydney as an Area Manager, Social Work within the Department of Social Security. He was then appointed CEO of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (NSW/ACT) from 1992–96 and later CEO of Mission Australia from 1997 - 2006.

He was also Founder and Chairperson of Second Harvest (Australia)
