, Symon was allocated to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RAA). Following 16 years of service he became the commanding officer of the 1st Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. In 1997 Symon served with the United Nations in South Lebanon during a period of great tension between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defence Force. He has also taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
