Band history

In 1975, Watson, saxophonist Danny Finney, drummer Pippin Barnett and pianist Martin McCavitt formed Idio Savant, an improvisational, art rock group in Richmond, Virginia. Their first recording, Shakers In A Tantrum Landscape, was recorded in 1979 and released on the Artifacts label. McCavitt left the band and they became a trio. They collaborated with Trans, the improvisational duo from Alabama of LaDonna Smith

During this time, Watson, Finney and Barnett, with the addition of Rebby Sharp on guitar and vocals and bassist Phil Trumbo, formed The Orthotonics
