Peek & Cloppenburg is an international chain of fashion department store

s. The chain is made up of two separate groups, Peek & Cloppenburg KG Düsseldorf (known as P&C West) and Peek & Cloppenburg KG Hamburg (known as P&C North) which operate independently from each other.

History

In 1869, Johann Theodor Peek (1845–1907) and Heinrich Anton Adolph Cloppenburg (1844–1922) founded Peek & Cloppenburg in The Netherlands

. Both men had moved from Germany to The Netherlands to learn the trade. In 1900 they founded a separate company in Germany, also called Peek & Cloppenburg. Why the company celebrated its 30-year anniversary in 1931, 30 years after the opening of their store in Berlin

), is unknown. From then on the year 1901 was the reference for anniversaries.
One son of founder Cloppenburg, James Cloppenburg (1877–1926), entered the business.
The other (younger) son, Anton Cloppenburg, married the daughter of founder Peek, Marie Peek (1879–1937) in 1901.
Anton Cloppenburg founded a separate company Peek & Cloppenburg in Hamburg
Hamburg

From this date, the Cloppenburg family was divided into the companies operating under the same name.
  • Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf

In 1926, James Cloppenburg junior (died 1986), son of James Cloppenburg senior entered the business. The third generation, Harro Uwe Cloppenburg (born 1940) is now the head of the company. His sons Hendrik, John and Patrick are also active in the company.

John founded the separate company Anson's in 1991.
In 1998, the until then separate P&C companies in The Netherlands and Belgium were added to Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf.

In 1937, Fritz Cloppenburg (1914–2003), son of Anton Cloppenburg, entered the business.
His son, James Cloppenburg, is the most recent generation now active in the company.

Brands

  • Both Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf and Peek & Cloppenburg Hamburg sell designer and own-brand fashion for men, women, teens and kids
  • Anson's sells fashion for men of designer brands and its own brands.
  • The brands McNeal (men's fashion) and Review (young fashion for men and women) have ties to the Cloppenburg family of P&C Düsseldorf. The two sub-brands are also sold outside of P&C in competitors' stores and have their own shops in Germany and Croatia.

Trivia

The Peek & Cloppenburg logo consists of a shield with the white letters "P" and "C" on it.
The shield is divided into two colours. The left side is dark red and the right side is dark blue.
  • Peek & Cloppenburg Hamburg has a white "&"-sign between the two letters.
  • Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf has a white small letter "u" for the word "und" (meaning and) between the two letters.
