Pelham Parkway (IRT White Plains Road Line)
Encyclopedia
Pelham Parkway is a local station
on the IRT White Plains Road Line
of the New York City Subway
. Located in the Bronx
at the intersection of Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road, it is served by the 2
train at all times, and the 5
train during rush hours in the peak direction. It has three tracks and two side platform
s.
There is a windscreen over much of the station; only the south end escapes. A view over the south end railings reveal that the station originally had low concrete walls and windows, resembling the IRT Flushing Line
stations on Queens Boulevard. The station still has old lights on the platforms. Evidence shows a removed sign near the south exit to the south mezzanine
. In order to harmonize better with the wide parkway over which the station was built, the entire exterior of the station was stucco
ed, including extra supports along the sidewalks (in addition to the plain steel supports down the White Plains Road pavement). These stuccoed supports effectively hide the steel supporting structure from parkway strollers and motorists. This station is currently under renovation, however the stuccoed supports will be preserved. There are two mezzanines, the south mezzanine to Pelham Parkway south is full time and will be made ADA-accessible
to both platforms, with three elevator
s being installed. The north end at Pelham Parkway North is a part-time booth.
