. The Blue Wahoos franchise was previously known as the Carolina Mudcats
and based in Zebulon, North Carolina
; it was purchased by the owners of the Pensacola Pelicans
in order to bring Double-A baseball to the city. The team will not retain the Mudcats name, which will be taken up by a new Class A team in Zebulon.
The Blue Wahoos nickname was decided in a fan contest run by Wendy's
in conjunction with the Pensacola News Journal
. It was officially announced on May 23, followed by the logo and colors on November 18.
