Peterhead railway station, Adelaide
Encyclopedia
Peterhead railway station is a railway station on the Outer Harbor railway line which is located in northwestern Adelaide
, straddling the suburbs of Peterhead
, Birkenhead
, and Exeter
on the LeFevre Peninsula. It is located 14.6km by railway from the Adelaide Railway Station
and caters for broad gauge
(1600mm) suburban trains
only.
The current station was opened in 1911, along with the Glanville
to Outer Harbor extension. Talks in the 1990s commenced to again terminate trains at Glanville, and provide alternate transport arrangements beyond Glanville. As a result, a feeder bus was introduced to connect Outer Harbour to the train at Glanville and Ethelton, as well as allowing passengers to travel to Port Adelaide
, Semaphore
(which used to have its own branch from the main line) and West Lakes. This was later split into two routes, one staying west near Military Road, and the other servicing the Eastern side of the Peninsula along Fletcher and Victoria Road
s. Fortunately for commuters on the Le Fevre Peninsula, these plans were later scrapped (and bus changes since then mean that these feeder buses no longer operate - or at least not as a localised loop).
Since at least the mid 1990s, discussion has been ongoing about the future of the entire line, however the most likely option would simply replace the train for a tram
(with possibly minor route alterations further up the track, between Adelaide and Woodville
, and at Port Adelaide).
