Married to Dr. Valeria Filip, MD, Petru Filip is the father of Roxana (born 1980).

Petru Filip holds two PhD degrees, one in engineering, the second in public administration. For the latter of the two subjects, he is holding a chair at the "Agora" University in Oradea, as Associate Professor. Several years spent as an Expert of the Urban Institute in Washington add value to both his experience as a public official as well as his academic achievements in the field of Public Administration.

 county branch of the Democratic Party in 1998, he became vice-president of the National Permanent Bureau (BPN) of the same party in 2005. On April 30, 2010, Petru Filip resigned his position as chairman of the Bihor County Branch of PD-L.

Given his long and successful tenure, his loyalty towards his Party and his experience in regional and local politics, he must be regarded as one of the significant figures in the second line of the Liberal Democratic Party (PD-L). To the landmarks of his political career one may count holding the mayor chair of one of the 10 largest Romanian municipalities as member of an opposition party, during the 2000-2004 PSD

As previously rumored, he ended his third term as Mayor of Oradea shortly before time, after being helped into European politics by the comfortable score attained by his Democratic Party's national list at the polls on November 25, 2007.

This date entered Romanian history as the finish line of the first ever electoral race to be lead in Romania for an alloted total of 35 seats (33, since 2009) in the European Parliament, after the country joined the European Union at the beginning of 2007.

Following a short career as MEP, Petru Filip returned to the stage of national politics in Romania, in late fall 2008 He ran and was elected Senator. For his (presumably) four year term in the upper House of the Romanian Parliament, he joined the Permanent Commission for Public Administration, Territorial Planning and Environmental Protection, which he chaired until September 8, 2010, when he was elected Vice President of the Senate.
